From the collection of a Swiss scholar, formed over the past thirty years.

Faced with a shortage of small-denomination coins, which made everyday transactions - and especially the exchange of gold dust - inefficient, the Portuguese crown devised a practical workaround: the so-called 'Gold Vintém'. Valued at 1/32 of a gold ounce, this tiny coin helped streamline tax collection and curb losses from tax evasion, which had been exacerbated by the simple fact that there wasn’t enough change in circulation.
